Museum Depot

The museum depot of the Sudeten German Museum houses all exhibits that are not on public display. Currently, around 60,000 objects are stored across two floor levels covering approximately 1,200 square meters.
As the collection continues to grow, the depot area was doubled in 2024, and the existing shelving and cabinets were expanded with a painting pull-out system and a mobile racking system. At present, the exhibits are being professionally relocated in accordance with conservation standards.

All new acquisitions are scientifically catalogued. In a database, not only the object itself but also its object biography and the life stages of its former owner are recorded in order to contextualize the collection within Sudeten German history.

Since the museum opened, the collection has nearly doubled thanks to numerous donations. Among the most significant and extensive holdings are historical prints, picture postcards, prayer books, as well as valuable glass and porcelain. Everyday objects such as household items, clothing, educational documents, as well as devotional items, musical instruments, toys, and products of economic history bear witness to Sudeten German living environments. A special focus of the collection is on objects that were carried during flight or expulsion, as well as on remembrance culture. In addition, the museum depot serves as a repository for dissolved local heritage rooms and artists’ estates.
